Baseball Card Magnets

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Today is the Major League Baseball First-Year Draft. It’s not as big as the drafts in the other three major professional sports (football, hockey, basketball) because baseball players take so long to develop in the minor leagues relative to the other major sports. Still, it’s an exciting day for thousands of young men. Baseball’s draft is the longest of any other sports — it lasts 50 rounds — and it used to be

Once upon a time, baseball cards ruled the day. In an era before Playstations, iPods and cell phones galore, kids entertained themselves with their larger than life heroes on slabs of cardboard. Not only were baseball cards on cards in packs with gum, they also came in magnets. These days, these baseball card magnets are not available in modern cards. No big shock there, right? But you can find all sorts of older magnets on sites of all stripes which is surprising.  And forget not about baseball magnets!

Have you ever seen a baseball card magnet anywhere? Maybe you know the answer to our #triviatuesday question on Twitter, which pays homage to the baseball draft:

What was the last year the Major League Baseball draft went beyond 50 rounds?

Well, we found out very quickly that magnets will absolutely not stick to funky sunglasses, nor do colleagues necessarily like being used for magnet related experiments.

Will Magnets Stick to Your Colleague?

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Today we look at a dazzling question asked throughout the ages —–”will magnets stick to your colleague? Being all things magnets, we took the bull by the horns looking for answers.

For today’s experiment, one of our graphic designers Andreas was kind enough to volunteer himself -and just a wee bit of his dignity- for the sake of science and human knowledge.  And speaking of bull, of popular (and cute) cow shaped magnet was randomly selected and put to the test.

So, today’s carefully controlled experiment proves a 25 mil magnet won’t stick to your colleague.  Indeed, a bit of a letdown, at least in our book.

Magnetic Mosaic Design Tutorial

Monday, February 14th, 2011

blinky

In our previous post, we made a magnetic car sign utilizing scrap magnetic material to support our favorite football team, the Jets. If you are interested in making magnetic mosaic designs, you’re in luck! This post is an in depth tutorial on how to make your own magnetic mosaic sign. For this tutorial, we made the little red Pac Man ghost known as ‘Blinky’. Isn’t it cute?

Here is what you’ll need to get started:

1. Magnetic scrap material, or magnetic strips.

2. Scissors or a paper cuter

3. Magnetic surface (i.e. refrigerator)

Step 1: Take your magnetic strips and cut them into 1 inch squares or whatever size you like.

Step 2: Choose the colors you want to use for the background (aqua), the object (red) and other details such his eyes(black and white).

Step 3: Do the outside border first and move your way in. Like a puzzle :)

Step 4: Place the magnetic squares as close together as possible. When the image is done, fill in extra spaces with some little strips. The design won’t be perfect so you can fill in the extra spaces with some extra bits and pieces.

Final Result: Voila!  ‘Blinky’ the Pacman ghost is completed and ready to be displayed :)
